Villarreal face Cádiz on Friday at 7:30pm CEST

Villarreal travel to Andalusia this Thursday to face Cádiz CF on Friday, at 7.30pm CEST, at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla in the match corresponding to matchday 4 of the 2023/24 LaLiga EA Sports season.

The clash of the Submarines pits two teams with the need to keep picking up points in order to achieve very different objectives. The team coached by Sergio González has a total of four points out of a possible nine after beating Deportivo Alavés on the opening day (2-0), losing to FC Barcelona (2-0) and earning a bittersweet point against UD Almería (1-1).

The Cádiz outfit are one of the teams in the competition that have most strengthened their squad in the summer transfer window. Javi Hernández, Escalante, Darwin Machís, Chust, Jorge Meré, Osmajic and the recent signing of Maxi Gómez are the new faces of the renewed Cádiz, who hope to achieve their goal of survival for another season.

Villarreal, meanwhile, are coming off the back of a match to remember against FC Barcelona, in which they lost 3-4 despite a good display against the reigning champions. However, at the Nuevo Mirandilla they have another chance to make it three points and get back into contention for the European places. Setién’s side are currently 13th in the competition with three points.

Despite being two historic teams in Spanish football who have enjoyed many seasons in the top flight, they have only met on eight occasions in the first division, with two wins for Villarreal, five draws and one win for Cádiz. This Friday’s match will also be special for Villarreal, partly because they have the great challenge of getting their first ever win at Cádiz’s stadium in the league. It is worth remembering that they did win 1-2 in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey in the 2014/15 season.

The match, which will be refereed by Pulido Santana, who will be assisted by Hernández Maeso on VAR.
