The defender has become the second oldest player to wear the Yellows shirt

The older, the wiser. Daniele Bonera made history when playing in the European tie against Rangers FC. The Italian defender became the second oldest footballer, and oldest ever outfield player, to defend Villarreal’s colours in an official match, after being named in the starting XI aged 37 years, three months and 20 days. He passed Robert Fernández, who last put represented the Yellows aged 36 years, 11 years and 25 days when Villarreal played Sevilla on June 30th 1999.

The outright record belongs to goalkeeper César Sánchez, who played his last professional game with the Yellow Submarine against Mirandés in the 2012/13 season, aged 40 years, three months and a day.
